Advanced Periodontal Care

Cleaning your teeth isn’t enough to keep your mouth healthy. Periodontal, or gum, care is essential to a healthy mouth and an overall healthy body. Gum disease affects more people than you might think. According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly half of all Americans have some form of the disease. At Lakeside Dental, Reno dentist Dr. Topham offers advanced gum care to keep your mouth and teeth in top shape.

Defeat Gum Disease with Perio Protect®

Some patients require a little extra care between dental cleanings in order to keep gum disease at bay. That’s where Perio Protect® comes in. Dr. Topham is one of only a handful of dentists in Reno to offer this highly effective treatment!

Perio Protect

Traditionally, dentists have treated gum infection with either prescribed topical solutions or by manually removing bacteria with dental instruments. Perio Protect combines the best aspects of both approaches! To begin with, Dr. Topham will provide you with a custom, comfortable plastic tray that you’ll wear just a few minutes each day. The tray contains a carefully prescribed medicine that keeps bacteria from growing in your gums. When you come in for your regular visits, he’ll examine your gums, and if necessary, clean away any remaining bacteria.

Benefits of Perio Protect:

  • Keeps your gums healthy between dental visits
  • Treats areas your toothbrush and dental floss can’t reach
  • Clear, comfortable trays are worn just a few minutes each day

Alternative Gum Disease Treatments

If Dr. Topham notices that you’re at risk for developing a gum infection, or you already have a small infection, he may prescribe Arestin®. This antibiotic powder has the ability to stop the infection in its tracks, and keeps infection from getting worse and needing more extensive treatment. After Arestin has treated the infection (it typically stays in place for three weeks), the infection can be managed with routine cleanings at our Reno dental office.

Deep cleanings with our soft tissue laser also help treat gum disease in a minimally invasive way. Using laser therapy instead of traditional gum surgery is not only more comfortable and efficient, it also requires no scalpels or sutures, so your healing time is faster. Laser therapy not only kills bacteria at the source, it also helps promote the regrowth of healthy, new soft tissue cells.

If you have red or swollen gums, or gums that bleed when you brush or floss, gum therapy may be able to help. Call our office today to learn more and schedule an appointment.
